Around 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
