British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
